Discover the fun of improvisational piecing geometric and linear units. Put them all together in a striking mega-9 patch with personality plus! Learn freeform cutting and how to join irregular blocks. Explore the design principles of repetition and variation. Concentrating on design and skill-building, you will complete at least one composition and be empowered to tackle larger projects with confidence. CLASS REQUIREMENTS

Two-day class: Saturday May 28 to Sunday May 29
Class times: 9am to 5pm
Students will need to bring:

  • Rotary cutter with a sharp blade
  • Cutting mat
  • Quilter’s ruler – 12in square
  • Smaller square ruler (optional – only if you already have it)
  • Chalk pencil
  • Neutral-coloured thread for piecing
  • Spray starch (optional)
  • Notebook, digital camera or camera phone
  • Batting, flannel sheet or similar to use as a design wall.

Fabric Selection:
This workshop is most suitable for fabrics that read as a single colour such as solids, hand-dyes, batiks, tone on tone prints and small-scale prints. Please ensure you have a variety of dark and light coloured fabrics.

Warm Up Exercises & Samples (optional but recommended): 
• Two, 6½ x 4in rectangles. 1 dark and 1 light.
• Six 6 ½ in squares. 3 dark and 3 light.
• Four 4 ½ in squares. 2 dark and 2 light.
• One 10x3in rectangle with a 25-40in long 1½ in wide strip in contrasting colour
• One 10×1½ in strip with a 25-40in long 1-2in wide strip in a contrasting colour
• Four 10x4in rectangles: 2 dark and 2 light

For your own compositions:

  • Assorted fabric scraps in both light and dark colours or at least 12 fat quarters in solid colours (six darks and six lights)
  • 1 metre contrasting (dark or light) fabric for background (may not be used for some designs)

Sewing machines will be supplied and will need a 1/4in foot.
Compositions/quilt tops only are created in class. Batting and background will be required to complete project at home.
