TUTOR: PHIL THOMAS
Learn how to transform your favourite photograph into a stunning picture quilt.
Landscape features, buildings, and other interesting scenes can be used with this techniques.
Before the class, you will receive simple instructions on how to choose a photo and Phil will prepare your pattern so that you are ready to go on the day.
In class, you will select fabrics by colour and value, then construct your quilt using fusible web applique.
Raw-edged machine ‘appli-quilting’ will complete the quilt. Please note that you may have to complete the machine stitching after the class. You will be given plenty of instruction on how to do this.
Skill level: All
Materials fee: Transparent plastic. $2 per 0.5 metre. Vliesofix Fusible Web will be available to purchase if students deplete their supply.

Foto to Fabric with Phil Thomas
Two-day class: April 15 to 16
Class times: 9am to 5pm
Pre-class preparation is required. Please contact philthomas95@hotmail.com for instructions ONLY when you have a class booking and no later than end of February 2023.
- Digital image – see pre-class preparation above on choosing an image so that you will have a suitable image and pattern ready on the day.
- Usual sewing supplies – pins, small sharp fabric scissors, small paper scissors, unpicker, tweezers (optional).
- Fabric – mix of fat quarters and plenty of large scraps of 100% cotton fabric (batiks work well).
Choose your colours depending on your image and avoid large-patterned fabrics, aiming to have solid or small patterned fabrics for texture. Look for interesting and unusual patterns and have plenty of lights and darks. - 0.5 metre of solid fabric as a background (I use black fabric, but you can choose any colour – look at your image to see if your background has more light or dark)
- Vliesofix or other light fusible web (new and in good condition, rolled not folded) – one piece, slightly larger than your pattern (approx 20x 25”)
- An ironing pad approx 20” x 25” – instructions for making your own will be provided after booking
- 0.5 metre thin batting *
- 0.5 metre fabric for backing *
- Variety of coloured threads (I use ordinary good quality sewing thread like Rasant or a rayon machine embroidery thread – NOT heavy decorative threads*
- Rotary cutter, mat, ruler
- Teflon applique mat if you have one – a Teflon baking sheet from a budget store or baking paper will also do.
- Thick black permanent Sharpie pen
- Pencil
- Masking tape
*Note: you may need to complete stitching after class
