Improvisational Squares in Squares
TUTOR: CECILIA KOPPMANN
Colour and all its attributes are fundamental to achieving visual effects of luminosity, gradation, and depth. Using free-hand cut concentric squares allows us to play even more with colour and gives our work an organic feel, far from the rigidity of traditional patterns.
In this workshop, participants will work with improvised concentric squares while exploring the infinite possibilities of colour. Discover different arrangement options, seeking impactful and harmonious effects.
You’ll learn to sew pieces of varying sizes to create an organic and unique result. Work with free-hand cutting and chain piecing techniques. Plus, make great use of your fabric scraps!

CLASS REQUIREMENTS
Improvisational Squares in Squares with Cecilia Koppmann
One-day Class: Friday, April 10
Class times: 10am to 5pm
Materials fee: None
You will need to bring:
Fabrics:
Solid, hand dyed or small print fabrics light, medium and dark in 2 colourways.
Fabric quantity: Since this is an improvisational class where each student will create their own unique piece rather than following a specific pattern, it’s challenging to give exact quantities. However as a guide Cecilia recommends students bring two colorways, and for each colorway:
- At least 2-3 light fabrics
- At least 2-3 medium fabrics
- At least 2-3 dark fabrics
Approximately 1 fat quarter of each fabric would work well. Leftovers from your stash are perfect for this!
This means a minimum of 12 fabrics total (6 per colorway). The more variety you bring in each colorway, the more options you’ll have to play with during class.
General Sewing Supplies
Sewing thread in a neutral colour or similar colour to the fabrics.
Rotary cutter and cutting mat
Scissors
Universal sewing machine needle
Sewing machines will be provided.
To complete the project at home you will need batting, backing and fabric for the binding.
