From Sketch to Stitch with Inktense Pencils

TUTOR: ANA BUZZALINO

In this class, you will use a sketched design (provided) to free-motion quilt it on the fabric as if you were sketching on a sketch pad. Students will learn how to create stunning backgrounds using stencils and a ruler.

Free-motion techniques will be demonstrated. Once the design is fully quilted, it will be coloured using Inktense pencils. Different techniques will be demonstrated.

Skill level: suits all levels. Some free-motion machine quilted experience beneficial but not needed.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS

From Sketch to Stitch with Inktense Pencils with Ana Buzzalino

One-day Class: Sunday, April 13
Class time:  9am to 5pm (2 hour lunch break)

Materials fee: $10 for full size patterns, Aloe Vera gel, Derwent booklet.  Please have the exact amount in cash in an envelope with your name on the front.

Students need to bring:

• 16″ square of PFD (Prepared for Dyeing) fabric, or good quality white fabric or off-white fabric. If not PFD, consider prewashing and ironing before class.
• 18″ square of low loft batting of your choice
• 18″ square of backing fabric
• Charcoal or black thread for both top and bobbin – Ana uses DecoBob, Invisafil or the Bottom Line for the bobbin and a rayon or cotton thread for the top – usually in 40 or 50 weight.
• Light coloured thread to match your background fabric (white or off-white – it could also be light yellow, or light pink, etc.)
• Thread snips or small scissors to cut threads
• Temporary spray adhesive (such as Odif 505) or pins to hold the layers together

• A few paper towels
• 1 container for water
• Notebook or paper for taking notes – optional
• Mechanical pencil and eraser
• Ruler such as 6″ x 12″ or similar
• A few stencils for the background – bring what you have – Ana will have some to share

• Inktense pencils by Derwent
o The 12-pencil set should suffice if purchasing. 24 pencils will give you more options of colours but use what you have or think you’ll use in the future.
o Pencils are also sold separately, so that’s a choice to pick the colours you’d like to use.

NOTE: Please make sure that the pencils you bring to class are INKTENSE pencils by Derwent and not something else. Other types like watercolour or soft pencils do not work in the same manner.

• Paint brushes: Ana likes the brand Simply Simmons. They are her go-to brushes (easy to find and inexpensive and they last a long time). Ana uses angular brushes in 3/8″, ¼” for smaller areas and ½” for larger areas. Use what you have and give them a try to see what works for you.

Note: Part of this class is on free-motion quilting. If you wear free-motion gloves, please bring them. The same goes for any other tools you normally use when free-motion quilting.

Sewing machines will be provided.
