Abstraction in Action
TUTOR: BRENDA GAEL SMITH
Learn how to create an abstract composition drawn from reality. Working from a personal source of inspiration found in nature or place, students will learn the fundamentals of abstraction through observation, reflection and repetition.
Brenda developed this design workshop especially for students looking to stretch their creative muscles and to explore abstraction both in concept and practice. The workshop includes:
- a brief overview of the history of abstraction in the visual arts;
- an introduction to the elements of design and developing your art vocabulary;
- warm-up design exercises using non-sewing tools;
- inspiration gathering and setting parameters;
- palette-building and creating pattern;
- compositional options and the principles of design; and
- converting ideas into pieced compositions.
Students will develop their composition in class. Depending on size and complexity, some compositions will not be completed in a 2-day workshop.
Brenda will provide guidance on trouble-shooting construction/piecing issues. However, this design workshop does NOT include detailed technique instruction. Students are welcome to use other techniques if they prefer but note that class machines will be set up for piecing.
Skill level:
All levels of design knowledge including beginners. Intermediate to advanced piecing skills
