Scrapplique

TUTOR: SHARON NICHOLLS-THOMSON

This is an easy, fun class suited to all skill levels, and anyone who wants to try three new super adaptable techniques. It’s called Scrapplique because it is appliqué with scraps. Super useful for quilters who can end up with more scraps than they know what to do with!

You will end up with two to three pieces of Scrapplique fabric – perfect for turning into a fun project. You will try three different ‘scrapplique’ techniques. The first, a raw edge appliqué variation, the second an addictive ‘collage’ method using a unique washaway stabiliser and the third, a turned edge ‘mosaic’ style also using a stabilising applique paper.  All three techniques use straight-line or matchstick machine stitching to hold the mini scraps in place and forming an interesting textured fabric.

On the second day, you can continue to make more Scrapplique fabric or turn the pieces already made into a zippered pouch, table runner or similar.

Skill level: Suitable for all, including absolute beginners.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS

Scrapplique with Sharon Nicholls-Thomson

Two-day Class: Thursday and Friday April 11 and 12
Class times:  10am to 5pm

Students need to bring:

  • A large ziploc bag of mixed scraps and tiny off cuts – 3″ square and under. Even teeny, weeny bits under 1″ square can be used. If you’re not the kind of person to keep these types of scraps, ask your friends and gather a bagful or request the optional kit
  • Two pieces of fabric approximately the size of fat quarters will be needed as backgrounds
  • For a table runner: two 30cm or 40cm full-width pieces – one for the background and one for backing
  • Sewline glue pen or small glue stick
  • Apliquick applique tools or a pair of cuticle sticks from the pharmacy
  • Medium sharp scissors, eg Karen Kay Buckley’s Perfect Scissors
  • Machine quilting thread – a variety of solid and variegated 50wt thread is great. Sharon used 3 different colours on each piece but you can choose neutrals or just one colour
  • 12wt Spagetti and variegated 12wt Fruitti by Wonderfil are good for extra texture. (optional)
  • 30cm x 110cm piece of wadding if making a table runner
  • 30″ By Annie zip or a 25cm dress zip if making a zippered pouch.

Sewing machines will be supplied.

Materials fee: $10 for additional stabiliser pack  (optional) and $10 for bag of tiny scraps (optional) payable direct to the tutor. Please have the exact amount in cash in an envelope with your name on it, to hand to the tutor at the start of the class.
