2027 Class – Scrap Mountain

SCRAP MOUNTAIN

TUTOR: SARAH FIELKE

Join Sarah in this fun and skill building class using your scrap fabrics. Every student will bring with them a bag of scraps to share with the class – we tip all the scraps into a mountain on the floor, and then make all our quilts from the Mountain! This is a project class, however every student will leave with a different quilt. Students will learn to string and crazy piece, and also work with a design wall to learn about using and controlling scrap and colour. Students will go home with a workbook and a set of templates that enables them to make hundreds of combinations of different quilts from the class patterns and skills learned.

Skill level: Intermediate to advanced

SCRAP MOUNTAIN WITH SARAH FIELKE

Two-day Class: Thursday, Friday, April 15 & 16

Class times: 10am to 5pm

Materials fee: $85

Payable direct to the tutor. Please have the exact amount in cash in an envelope with your name on it.

The kit includes:

  • Interlocking acrylic template set
  • Instruction and design booklet featuring over 30 quilt designs using the provided template set.

You will need to bring:

  • A yard or so of background fabric, or ‘control fabric’ (and options) if you choose to bring it. This is something that can be easily done after class, but you might want something there to give you ideas as you choose layouts. Sarah recommends that you bring at least one.
  • As large as a bag of scrap fabric as you’re comfortable to pack! If you’re coming a long way, even a zip lock bag with a few big handfuls in it will be a start. Alternatively, some fat quarters or fat 8ths cut into strips 1 inch – 2 inch-wide (any width in that range is fine). Remember that you will be sharing your scraps into the mountain with the class – and that you will be working with theirs! Please do not bring meterage for the mountain, a bag full of small pieces is what we are looking for.
  • Something to stabilise your quilt if you choose to use it. Sarah explains: “When I string and crazy piece, I don’t use anything behind my piecing – I’m a pretty confident string piecer and I just wing it and deal with the bias. I recommend that you do as I say though, not as I do – scrap piecing is about all the bias and loose edges, you will likely need to use a stabiliser. The best thing to use is the paper made for foundation paper piecing, such as Carol Doak foundation papers. It is easy on your sewing machine and easy to remove. You can also bring normal copy paper, but it can be hard work for your sewing machine, and blunts your needle quickly. You can also use a plain fabric behind your scrap piecing, but I don’t recommend it – it can’t be removed afterwards, which makes your quilt very heavy and thick.” Whatever you choose to bring, bring a good supply, at least fifteen pages of paper or a yard of base fabric.
  • Paper for sketching ideas and taking notes
  • Pencil
  • Extra sewing machine needles
  • Neutral coloured cotton thread for machine piecing
  • Pins
  • Small cutting mat
  • Short ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • There is a lot of cutting and trimming in this class and it’s really helpful to have your own little station next to your sewing machine.
  • There is also a lot of pressing and only a few irons – if you have a seam roller or a clapper you will find it very helpful.
  • Block book. This is not essential but it’s very helpful – it will take a while to make enough blocks for a whole quilt’s worth of scrap if you are making a bed quilt. Every time I start a new quilt at home, I allocate the project its own block book. All the pieces for that quilt live inside the book until I am done, making sure they are safe, flat and together until I’m ready to use them. If you would like to make one, when you receive these material requirements, please email me [email protected]
say hello and I will send you the block book pattern via PDF as a gift for taking my class. Give yourself a few weeks before class if you can, so you have time to make one! They’re very quick to make and very useful.

Sewing machines will be provided.

To complete the project at home you will need more fabric! How much really depends on which layout you choose and how much of your quilt you get constructed during class. Students are encouraged to take some of the Scrap Mountain home to keep working. You will also need batting, backing and binding for when your quilt is finished.
