DYNAMIC HYPNOTIC
TUTOR: LORENA URIARTE
Discover the surprising possibilities hidden within a striped fabric. In this technique-based workshop, you’ll learn how to use fussy cutting, value and colour placement to transform a simple stripe into a dynamic patchwork design filled with movement and unexpected secondary patterns.
You’ll experiment with different cutting angles and square sizes to see how the same fabric can produce completely different effects. The process is both precise and playful, and you’ll develop the skills to make your own design decisions rather than simply following a pattern.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a collection of pieced blocks and the knowledge to continue developing your own Dynamic Hypnotic quilt.
Your finished design will depend on your fabric, ruler size and how much time you have available, making every quilt uniquely yours.
Skill level: Suitable for confident beginners through to advanced quilters.

DYNAMIC HYPNOTIC WITH LORENA URIARTE
ONE-DAY CLASS: Saturday, April 17
Class times: 9am to 5pm
You will need to bring:
- 2m striped fabric* (see below)
- A couple of square rulers to suit the scale of your stripe (anywhere from 4½ inch to 10½ inch). Choose based on your luggage space, if you can only bring one, pick the size you’ll use most (Lorena finds 5 inch to 8 inches ideal).
- Small scissors or rotary cutter and mat
- 2B pencil or erasable fabric marker
- Fabric glue stick eg Sewline
- Fine cotton thread to match your fabric
- 80/12 sharp sewing machine needle
*What makes for an interesting stripe? Ombre fabrics, colour gradations, stripes of varying widths, and multi-coloured designs work beautifully for this technique. Wide two-colour stripes can also create striking results. Aim for stripes that are at least 1 inch wide.
To complete this project at home: This is a technique class. The amount of fabric you’ll need depends on the repeat of your stripe, the size of your chosen square ruler, and the desired finished size of your quilt. Fussy cutting is a tricky technique to give yardage estimates for. You may need more fabric to make a bigger quilt.
Sewing machines will be provided.
