MAYFAIR PETALS

In the Mayfair Petals workshop, students will dive into the creative world of machine applique, learning the essential skills and confidence-building techniques that bring this modern, repeating-block design to life. They will be guided through how to prepare and position fusible appliqué shapes, stitch them with options for stitches, and master the curves, corners, and details that make applique shine.
Along the way, students will explore playful colour combinations, discover how to create striking contrast, and practise the stitching methods that elevate their finish from ‘handmade’ to beautifully polished. By the end of the class, you’ll not only understand the full applique process, but will feel empowered to use these techniques in future quilts with ease and creativity.

Class Requirements

Two-day Class: Thursday, Friday, April 15 & 16
Class times: 10am to 5pm
Materials fee: $78
OPTIONAL: additional $38 for Applique Thread Set (Wonderfil Splendor)
Payable direct to the tutor. Please have the exact amount in cash in an envelope with your name on it.
The kit includes:
- Mayfair Petals Quilt Pattern Booklet
- Acrylic Template Set
You will need to bring:
- Fabrics for Quilt as per pattern requirements
- Background Fabric: 4.6m (Just bring half of the Background Fabric listed here for the workshop)
- Colours/Prints: Flowers, Leaves and Bees – 13 fat quarters
- Green Fabrics: 3 fabrics x 12cm each, WOF
- Machine piecing thread
- Fusible web
- Rotary cutter
- Ruler
- Mat
- Mechanical pencil (for accurate tracing)
- Teflon Pressing Cloth Applique Sheet
- Starch spray (Best Press)
- Bias Tape Maker – 12mm (½in)
- Fabric Glue Pen
- General sewing supplies (eg pins, unpicker, spare sewing needles – Universal size 80, scissors, paper scissors, small scissors)
- Lightbox if you have one
If you choose not to purchase the optional Applique Thread Set from the tutor, you will also need to bring:
- Applique thread (I like Wonderfil Splendor) to match Colour/Print Fabrics and Green Fabrics
Sewing machines will be provided.
To complete the project at home: you will need the remainder of the background fabric and binding fabric.
