SCRIBBLING WITH PURPOSE
TUTOR: JANINE JUDGE
Discover how thread painting (free hand machine embroidery) can bring a fabric collage to life.
You will begin by creating an accurate fabric collage using a pattern developed from your reference photo, carefully selecting fabrics to establish the colour, shape and value of your flowering gum. Next delve into the art of thread painting (freehand machine embroidery), using expressive stitching to add texture, depth, subtle shading and seamless transitions between fabrics. Watch your artwork come to life as thread transforms your fabric collage into a realistic Flowering Gum.
While making this project, you will learn the technique by creating a realistic gum flower artwork.
You will learn to create a freezer paper pattern from your reference photo; how to build a realistic fabric collage as the foundation for your artwork and thread painting techniques to add texture, shading and fine detail (scribbling with purpose).
At the end of the class you will have a completed (or nearly completed) realistic gum flower artwork, and you will have the confidence and skills to create realistic art from your own reference photo.
Skill level: Confident beginner to advanced
