Mosaic Scrapplique

TUTOR: SHARON NICHOLLS- THOMSON

Do you know Mosaic Art? Small pieces of ceramic or glass tiles cut, glued and grouted in place to make delicate designs on walls, tables or sculpture? In this approachable and fun class we will combine the aesthetic of mosaic art with Scrapplique Techniques to make a mosaic composition of a quilt block or motif from nature as pictured. Extend your Scrapplique experience from last year’s AQC in a new direction or learn a new technique with a versatile stabiliser product.

Our class project will be approx A4 size and could be used as a mini quilt, cushion, table runner, journal cover or as a block in a larger quilt project.

Skill level: Suits all. No Mosaic or Scrapplique experience necessary! Class is very suitable for beginners or anyone who would like an easy and calm Sunday class to finish up their AQC.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS

Mosaic Scrapplique with Sharon Nicholls-Thomson

One-day Class: Sunday, April 13
Class times:  9am to 5pm (2 hour lunch break)

Materials fee: $5 for the necessary adhesive wash away stabiliser and prepared designs to choose from will be included in the kit.

Students need to bring:

  • HB pencil
  • Black Sharpie
  • Medium size fabric scissors
  • A ziploc bag full of small scraps. See Note
  • One fat 1/8 or 25cm x 30cm size piece of plain fabric for your ‘grout’. A bigger piece if you are likely to want to work bigger than 25 x 30cm. White or Black – See Note
  • Scrap wadding and backing a few cm larger than your grout. A handful of pins (normal or safety) to sandwich your piece together.
  • Normal 50wt thread for quilting, the same colour as your grout.

Note: It is possible to work bigger but it will take longer and you may not get to the quilting stage in class.  Your grout could be black, white, grey, a sandy colour or anything that will be a good contrast with your scraps. For example, if all your scraps are black or dark, make your grout pale. If all your scraps are saturated colours, black looks amazing as a grout. Your grout needs to be a solid colour or something that reads as a solid. Multi colour prints won’t work for grout. Your scraps could be anything and everything; they could be coordinated in a colour way or selected solid colours to match your design as shown in the examples. We will use even the smallest scraps. About ½ inch square is about the smallest we can use so don’t throw away those tiny bits.  If you have no scraps, ask your friends to donate or bring fat 1/8ths to cut down. Sharon will also have some available on the day. To save time, suggested designs will be supplied. If you wish to do your own design please contact Sharon by end March 2025 to arrange and discuss suitability on sharon@berryquiltandco.com.au

To complete your piece at home you will need binding and facing – it is not necessary to bring these to class.

Sewing machines with walking foot will be provided for use in class.
