Has free motion quilting been a little daunting until now? Have you been trying it but are not happy with the results? Quilting between the lines will help ease your concerns. Having a pounced grid on your fabric helps you to have a contained area to quilt in, guiding you in shape and scale. You will work with three different stencils, varying in shape and size, which will be yours to take home to give you more confidence to have fun free motion quilting a variety of patterns. We will explore patterns of leaves, flowers, textures, continuous curves, ribbons, pebbles and lots more. This is an intensive but rewarding class. The sun is setting and hot air balloons drift lazily across the sky creating silhouettes and serenity. This design is enhanced by a dark-to-light gradation of gorgeous, hand-dyed fabric. Simple ninepatch blocks are carefully placed to create a dimensional background. Pattern also includes templates for billowy clouds, and doves for a custom quilt. Design variations, machine quilting techniques, colour theory and Karla’s unique dyeing process will be discussed throughout the class. Read the Class Requirements.

Gillian loves photographing coloured houses and has seen many throughout the world. She has made several quilts, some large, some small, all featuring houses, all reminders of the places she has been. In this workshop students will be able to create a wall hanging or panel of their own house or a townscape from a photograph. This workshop includes some innovative design and technical skills also some contemporary approaches to appliqué, print and machine embroidery along with some useful shortcuts which will be transferable to other projects.

Gillian will be able to provide much of the specialist equipment used such as suitable printing blocks and fabric colouring equipment, although students who take on a very complex design will not get to this stage. She also has a good variety of patterns (mostly European houses) that can be used. Students may not get to the sewing machine stage during class, but Gillian gives a sewing machine demonstration so that textile artwork can be completed at home. Read the Class Requirements.

Skill level: Suitable for all skill levels with basic cutting, piecing skills and the ability to sew an accurate ¼ inch seam.

Materials fee: $10 includes A4 full colour pattern book


Star Lily is a pieced medallion-style quilt; create your own striking version using solids in a range of vibrant rainbow hues or choose a more traditional range of fabrics to create a timeless heirloom. The quilt is created with traditional piecing methods, making one border at a time, and then adding each new border to the quilt centre.

The quilt comes together quickly and the blocks are simple to make and have dramatic impact in their simplicity. You will learn lots of tips to help make your sewing and piecing easier and more accurate.

The pattern is easy to follow, cutting instructions are extremely detailed, and there are diagrams to guide you through every step. A jelly roll, a contrast fabric and one background are all that is needed.

The finished size is 64 inches square with the option to increase the size of the quilt to 84 inches square or 96 inches square by adding more borders. Instructions will be included in the pattern book. Requirements for the larger quilt are included but the class will work on the smaller quilt. Read the Class Requirements.

Maps are intriguing as an art form and as a vehicle for artistic expression. They are personal explorations of map language and imagined landscapes. Through satellite imagery sites like Google maps, almost any place can be translated into an exquisite mixed media Cartographic Quilt. Name a favourite place. Is it in your city, your state, or somewhere far away? In this class, you can design a cartographic map of a favorite location such as your house or birth place. Discover the possibilities of creating a map from fabric, paint and thread! Using a fun and simple series of painted and collaged, mixed-media techniques, you will create your own small fibre art map of a favourite place capturing the feeling or ingredients of a place. Valerie will guide you through a series of techniques that will provide opportunities to learn about design while giving you the freedom to experiment within a structured framework. Introduction to improvisational techniques that ‘break the rules’ and encourage spontaneity and freedom … sound a little scary? As vague as this sounds, there are a multitude of ways to construct, using improvisational processes and in this class a number of these ‘frameworks’ will be explored. In creating freeform, the mind can ignore quilting rules and the rotary cutter becomes your expressive tool. Cutting fabric, playing with colour, exploring space, varying shapes and disrupting formal quilting order will connect ideas whilst lots of creative play will occur with your scrap of stash fabrics. The sample blocks illustrate some of the frameworks to try, including block building, crisscross, curves, strippy layers, strip piecing, stitch and flip, splicing, insert and slice, accent strips/blocks, chain-pieced blocks, lazy log cabins and organic circles. This technique is based on core structure using quilting rulers and then adding the elements with free motion fill designs turning a plain piece of fabric into something special. You will also need backing fabric and batting, then pick up your scissors and you are all set to go! If you would like to add people to your quilt, Meri will teach you a simple, fool-proof method of doing so.
