VINTAGE KEEPSAKE

Sunday – One Day Class

Tutor: Christine Lethlean

Skill level: All levels

Materials fee: Picture frames (provided at extra cost $20 to $40, optional); fabric kits (provided at extra cost $15 - $25, optional)

More often than not the word ‘vintage’ evokes images of embroidered doilies and crochet-edge tea towels. In this workshop students will be guided to work with treasured pieces of fabric and bric-a-brac that have their origins in traditional stitching techniques and combine contemporary methods to create a piece of art work that is modern, unique and refreshing. Many of us have kept or collect precious pieces but do not know what to do with them, and they often get stored away. This class is an opportunity to explore creative ways to bring these treasured textiles to life. Students will achieve an understanding of how to compose a piece of artwork, work with colour, dissect sections and build their work in layers using a variety of embroidered basting, hand piecing and appliqué techniques. Finished pieces can be suitable for framing or as a wall hanging or applied to soft furnishings such as cushions.

SCRIPTS, SCROLLS & MAGIC SYMBOLS

Sunday – One Day Class

Tutor: Alicia Merrett

Skill level: All levels

Ancient Egyptian scrolls, Mexican codex, carved runes, Aboriginal paintings, un-deciphered scripts – they are the signature elements of civilisations and cultures that preceded ours. Magic and science merged together in ancient times; priests and kings ruled through their ability to read, write, and therefore interpret ‘signs from the heavens’. Participants will devise their own contemporary interpretation of ancient symbols, and create expressive textile pieces – flat, rollable or a combination of both – using mainly techniques of fused appliqué and machine quilting; with old-fashioned lettering, reverse appliqué and hand stitching also included if desired. The work will need to be finished at home.

MAKE IT, MODERN DESIGNING

Saturday, Sunday – Two Day Class

Tutor: Julie Haddrick

Skill level: Some quilting experience required

Find your voice and design your own modern quilts. Julie provides many starting points; quick, easy art exercises that encourage playful idea generation and original thinking. Use unique colour choices, original photos, collage, sketching and learn different ways to develop new designs. Students will bring simple tools and materials, no pre-conceptions and a willingness to explore.

Using samples and swatches from day one, students will piece and or appliqué and quilt using their own designs and favourite techniques. Julie will be demonstrating improvisational machine piecing using low volume background fabrics with high contrasting and graphically bold designs eg. chair, cross designs. Students may use any preferred construction techniques. Modern quilting includes, but is not restricted to being: the use of bold colours and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid colour, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. Julie will focus on the particular elements: idea generation, scale, colour and stitch, and will lead each student into new directions.

CONFIDENT COLOUR – SOLD OUT

Saturday, Sunday – Two Day Class

Tutor: Gloria Loughman

Skill level: All levels

For almost every artist, colour is a challenge. In this two day class we will look at colour schemes that are based on contrast and others on unity. We will put this knowledge into practice by making a number of small landscapes using the same pattern but different colour schemes. Perspective, an important element of landscape design, will also be emphasised. The pattern for the landscape will be supplied so that we can concentrate on colour choices rather than drawing. There will be a choice of four different landscapes. A sewing machine will not be necessary as the landscapes will be constructed on a base of tearaway and can be stitched and quilted at home. We will aim to complete four to six small landscapes that can be finished separately or joined together.

LAYERS – COLOUR, SHAPE, TEXTURE & FORM – SOLD OUT

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Friday – Four Day Class

Tutor: Velda Newman

Skill level: Suits all

Materials fee: $30

This class throws all the rules of stringent design out the window. First explore machine stitching techniques for texture and shape. Next will be the basic lessons for how to paint on fabric. Using acrylic paints, learn how to get ‘colour, shading and form’ into a piece.

Learn to use other mediums, such as resist, pencils and Copic inks for detail work, and to work with an overhead projector. This will give a choice of sizes (up to 90cm x 90cm) to choose from, for the composition. Bring photos of simple, defined shapes, such as flowers, fish, fruit, veggies, birds; these ideas work best for this class. Stuck for ideas? Velda will bring some design sheets that you may purchase for $10.50 a sheet (optional).
