In this class you will start by learning to make the centre block of the Moncarapacho quilt using only hand stitching with running stitch. Willyne will show you her way of fussy-cutting and help you to choose fabric colours. You will make a 10-pointed star. Materials fee: $65 kit includes one metre of 24 inch-wide Steam-a-Seam, one metre of Wonder Under, one metre of freezer paper and two 50cm lengths of suitable hand-dyed fabric for background and tiles, 25cm of fabric made up of assorted hand dyed fabrics for leaves, and a reel of variegated thread.


A forest is often filled with a play of light as the sun filters through to some areas and leaves others in mysterious gloomy shade. A way of recreating this dappled sunshine backdrop is to tile a background in a variation of colours. The addition of detailed trees, branches and leaves in the foreground adds perspective and interest. The tiled background is created by fusing small squares or rectangles to a base fabric. In this one-day workshop, a pattern is provided for a smaller wall hanging, which allows students to work through the process. Then they can go on to make their own original design at home. Has free motion quilting been a little daunting until now? Have you been trying and not happy with the results? Quilting between the lines will help ease your concerns! Having a pounced grid on your fabric helps you to have a contained area to quilt in, guiding you in shape and scale. You will work with three different stencils, varying in shape and size. The stencils will be yours to take home and the class will give you more confidence to have fun when free motion quilting a variety of patterns. We will explore patterns of leaves, flowers, textures, continuous curves, ribbons, pebbles and lots more. This is an intensive but rewarding class. This class repeats on Sunday. Heavenly bodies in warm, earthy colors orbit around a central column. The simplicity of the design is enhanced by gorgeous, rich colors of hand-dyed fabric. This project gets a jump-start with die-cut strips provided in the kit. Karla will teach raw-edge appliqué with a satin-stitch or zig-zag finish using variegated thread. Design techniques and variations will be discussed throughout the class. Some students may finish the top by the end of class and finishing techniques will be discussed, including zig-zag quilting. Gillian has made many quilts inspired by jumpers that are so popular in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Her large quilt won a prize in the Art Quilt competition at Festival of Quilts in Birmingham in 2015 and many of Gillian’s other Jumper Quilts have been displayed at quilt exhibitions throughout Europe.

These lovely quilts are made using an innovative method of inlaid appliqué that Gillian has developed. The blocks are made first by hand and then decorated with stitching; this can be carried out by hand or machine. Two blocks make a needlecase; more blocks joined together make a quilt. Finally, stencilling is added to the background. A smaller and different version can be created to make into a pin cushion. Read the Class Requirements.

Star Lily is a pieced medallion-style quilt; create your own striking version using solids in a range of vibrant rainbow hues or choose a more traditional range of fabrics to create a timeless heirloom. The quilt is created with traditional piecing methods, making one border at a time, and then adding each new border to the quilt centre.

The quilt comes together quickly and the blocks are simple to make and have dramatic impact in their simplicity. You will learn lots of tips to help make your sewing and piecing easier and more accurate.

The pattern is easy to follow, cutting instructions are extremely detailed, and there are diagrams to guide you through every step. A jelly roll, a contrast fabric and one background are all that is needed.

The finished size is 64 inches square with the option to increase the size of the quilt to 84 inches square or 96 inches square by adding more borders. Through satellite imagery sites like Google maps, almost any place can be translated into an exquisite mixed media Cartographic Quilt. Name a favourite place. Is it in your city, your state, or somewhere far away? In this class, you can design a cartographic map of a favorite location such as your house or birth place. Discover the possibilities of creating a map from fabric, paint and thread! Using a fun and simple series of painted and collaged, mixed-media techniques, you will create your own small fibre art map of a favourite place capturing the feeling or ingredients of a place. Valerie will guide you through a series of techniques that will provide opportunities to learn about design while giving you the freedom to experiment within a structured framework. Introduction to improvisational techniques that ‘break the rules’ and encourage spontaneity and freedom … sound a little scary? As vague as this sounds, there are a multitude of ways to construct, using improvisational processes and in this class a number of these ‘frameworks’ will be explored. In creating freeform, the mind can ignore quilting rules and the rotary cutter becomes your expressive tool. Cutting fabric, playing with colour, exploring space, varying shapes and disrupting formal quilting order will connect ideas whilst lots of creative play will occur with your scrap of stash fabrics. The sample blocks illustrate some of the frameworks to try, including block building, crisscross, curves, strippy layers, strip piecing, stitch and flip, splicing, insert and slice, accent strips/blocks, chain-pieced blocks, lazy log cabins and organic circles. You will also need backing fabric and batting, then pick up your scissors and you are all set to go! If you would like to add people to your quilt, Meri will teach you a simple, fool-proof method of doing so.
