About the Maker: Gillian Travis from the UK, is a super talented textile artist, author and tutor. She has won many awards for her artful quilts which she displays around the world.

She studied a City and Guilds Embroidery course in the early 90s when her children were young; following this she started to teach textiles both in the UK and internationally. Having trained as a landscape designer, Gillian loved bringing these design skills to make quilts. Many years later she is still making quilts and teaching from her studio at her home in the South Pennines in Yorkshire. Most of Gillian’s quilts are inspired by the many photos she takes while travelling. She enjoys using a range of techniques in her stunning work with most of her quilts being painted, printed or appliqued and usually strikingly colourful. Read more at gilliantravis.co.uk

From the maker: ‘I have always loved to travel, when I put on my rucksack and board a plane or train I often feel 25 again. Sometimes I travel for a holiday whilst other times I travel to teach quilting or to exhibit my quilts, and have been lucky enough to receive invitations from around the world.

Whilst away I take masses of photos, return home and use these photos to make my contemporary quilts.

I use paint, print, appliqué and machine stitch, occasionally adding some hand stitching. My quilts are sometimes small, these are often my Journal Quilts, larger ones are often made responding to international challenges. I have made hundreds of quilts and have selected a few for this exhibition

They are all very special to me. They remind me of enjoyable times with my friends and family Many have travelled the world and have been shown in several International exhibitions.
